I seem to recall something I read recently about this too - I search for it and come back if I find it. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the curvature of the lens and the distance from the subject. I'll have to study up on it. I do that with my water photos all the time. They always look like the ocean is emptying out one end, LOL. But you can Google for Elements of Phsop and see what you get.
