In the Shadows
Yesterday morning, my neighbor's yard was largely in the shadows.
I'm not really happy with this image. In real life, it was mistier and softer. This was shot on "intelligent auto" mode of my little purse camera. I knew I'd have some blown highlights where the sun was peeking through the tree, but I didn't have time to mess around - I was heading off to work. I did play with shadows, highlights, camera RAW, some adjustment layers, and a couple of textures (which I ended up not using), but after all that, this image isn't much different than the SOC photo.
Any ideas on how to bring out that fine layer of mist against the far treeline, and generally make this photo more interesting would be gratefully accepted and tried out.

I like the image just as it is. Maybe enhance the sun spot with a highlight.

ReplyDeleteI like the sky a lot, but I don't know how to get the effect you are looking for. I'll be checking back to see if anybody has advice.

Your problem is that you were THERE and captured the scene with your eyes that have so many more light/dark/color receptors than your camera and you remember it in all its glory.The nice thing is that this photo will be enough to trigger the memory of the original in your mind and since we never saw the original, we love it too and don't expect more from it. I love these type of scenes.So moody...
ReplyDeleteWhat I do with that sort of image (I had the same issues with the photo of the misty barn I just posted) is to use adjustment layers in PSE. I'd first work on the sky, then use the brush tool in black to paint out the ground on the adjustment layer. Then I'd so the same for the ground, painting out the sky. If you use a soft brush, the intersection isn't noticeable. That way you can darken the sky and highlight the drama in the foggy areas on the surface.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks fine, and agree with what KarenAnn says about the eyes/camera difference. Sometimes I get closer to capturing the mood by tossing in a gradient map using some sky colored gradient, going through the blend modes and seeing what happens. Doesn't always work but sometimes you get closer.
