Happy Groundhog's Day!

In the US and Canada, February 2nd is Groundhog's Day, when Punxsutawney Phil makes his annual appearance. If he sees his shadow, it means 6 more weeks of winter. This is not a groundhog (it's a marmot...a sort of cousin), and it wasn't taken in 2011, but I thought I'd post it anyway to commemorate this funny little holiday.

  2. Ground hog, marmot - who cares? Just so the news is spring is near. No more six weeks of winter! Thanks for the photo, archived or not.

  3. I bet the ground is so frozen that the poor little ground hog can't even get out of it's hole...does that mean 6 more weeks of winter?? His hole is probably filled w/ snow there in Chicago! :) I love this...I love the way this marmot is just peeking out! Too cute!

  4. Ha! I'm glad he did NOT see his shadow today, because although I love animals, I may have had to kill him ;-)

  6. funny: on the little picture the animal seemed to me nearly like a moose; we have groundhogs here in the mountains, to be seen in summertime, because in winter they are sleeping. Sleep well, little boy!

  7. It is an odd little 'holiday', isn't it? So popular that the Canadians had to copy it with Wiarton Willy and Shubenacadie Sam. I never can keep straight whether we're hoping for a shadow or no shadow....

  8. Great shot for the day! I do hope he's right about spring being closer but I'm not counting on it.

  9. I sure hope that groundhog didn't see his shadow today. That is a great picture of a marmot. The setting is perfect.
