Joy

I took great joy in watching these tiny Sanderlings along the water's edge on Plum Island, Massachusetts. When the water would recede, they would all scurry onto the newly-soaked sand, scrounging for a bite to eat.

When the next wave rolled in, they would turn, almost as a group, and scamper away from the curl of the water.

I managed to also catch them mostly in profile. They were a joy to watch!

  1. What fun to see the line of birds scampering back and forth in unison.

  2. Hi Val,
They look like they are having so much fun running in and out of the water. Have a great day!

  3. Love the way they line up and then just instinctually respond to the surging surf.

  4. Do you think it is a learned behavior or is it innate? I supposed getting slammed once by a wave would make it learned.

  6. I love this series and I love these birds or whatever their relative is here on the left coast. They are always so perfectly in tune with the tide and swell.
