Out of the desert, on to the water!

Nothing like a little whitewater rafting to take the heat out of the desert! The day after our hike, a long drive from Phoenix brought us deep into the Superstition mountains, where we paddled through Class II and III whitewater down the Salt River. Not all of Arizona is hot and arid; when the rafts pushed off, it was 43 degrees!

Without excellent communication, you won't make it through the more technical parts of the river. Even getting the raft down to the river requires good communication between the guide and the paddlers.

  1. I've only gone white water rafting once, and it was a thrill I don't normally get to feel....that thrill of danger! Fun! I'm glad everyone communicated well!

  4. I've always wanted to whitewater rafting. A couple of years ago we went to a wedding in Aspen and I was so excited that I could finally go on the beginner/chicken's raft. When we called to make our resos we were told that there was no rafting due to the drought!!

  5. The salt river is great in the spring. Lucky you. I haven't doen this in several years. I want to go down the Colorado on one of the week long rafting trips we just always seem to have too much other stuff going on. Nice shot

  7. Val, you are really going to have to make a scrapbook with all of these pictures in it at the end of the year. It will be a record of all of your travels.
