Any suggestions for getting a sharper moon? My camera shop told me to switch off image stabilization on my lens, since the camera was mounted on a tripod (did that...). I'd read someplace that good moon settings are shutter at 1/125, f/8, ISO 100. My moons were too dark for that. I messed around with the ISO settings as you can see below. Except for a little tweak to exposure and brightness in ACR, and cropping, these are pretty much straight from the camera.
(Above) Tripod mount, self-timer, ISO 100, shutter 1/40, f/6.3, focal length 270mm

Your moons are much sharper than what I usually get, I really think they are beautiful! I especially love the second image w/ the silhouettes in front of the moon...just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any experience with moon shots, so I can't help--but I do absolutely love the haunting picture with the plants silhouetted against the moon.
ReplyDeleteNice shot :)
ReplyDeleteI would agree first with the IS, turning it off. I have the D80 and that is the first thing I learned with using my tripod was turning it off. It seems to overcompensate otherwise. I dont have a lens to get shots that close. I would love to have a close up lens over 200 or so. This is a great shot, I really love the one with the plants, very cool.
ReplyDeleteI take a lot of moon pictures too and have the same problem. Did you use the auto focus? I seem to get better pictures with that on. I also turn off the IS on the lens. I can't wait to see what kind of advice you get because I could use some too. I took a moon picture the other night and couldn't get the sky to show up the way it was. I did get a little help so you might want to check that on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI loved looking at your moon photos even if they didn't come out the way you wanted. Sorry I have no advice for you!
ReplyDeleteNice sharp job with the moon! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSuch nice moon shots. Love the second one in particular! The silhouettes really give perspective on that shot. Nicely done!
