Powerful car, powerful message

Take a good look at this car. Really look at it. Do you notice anything odd about it?

I hope you noticed that the front is upside down, while the back is right side up. This was a teaching car. The officer demonstrated; she activated a switch, and the front of the car began to rotate, like meat on a spit. She cranked it up to simulate a rollover accident at 30 mph. In the front seat, a crash dummy (baby) remained safely buckled in. Her adult counterpart was not so lucky, having been flung, unbelted, from the open window in an earlier demonstration. Flung hard enough to knock out some of his stuffing. A powerful message about seatbelt usage to young bystanders (and me, too!)

  1. a creative look to a teaching car, think it attracts a lot of people. The seatbelt reminder is always needed. Don't know about US and OZ but in Sweden there is a a law that everybody in the car must be belted.

  2. Now that is cool...never have seen anything like it! I am sure after that demo everyone there will be wearing their seatbelts!

  3. Hi Val,
Awesome way to teach seat belt safety. If one person starts wearing their seat belt it was worth it. Have a great day!

  4. Seeing the dummy fly out would be a powerful teaching moment. Never drive without buckling up!

  5. We had a car like that to scare people from drunk driving.

  6. It all stemmed from that BOOK "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance" Automotive Yoga can be a real help in tuning your machine.

  7. Wearing a seatbelt is compulsory in Australia, saving many lives that would otherwise have been lost.

  8. We have rollover demos here at the annual town picnic. There's also something they call "the convincer." People are strapped in a car with a full seat-belt, then the car is launched down a track and stopped short to simulate a low speed collision. They force felt is impressive, and it shows people pretty convincingly (hence the name) how important a seat-belt is to prevent devastating injury.

  9. Can you ride it? At Disneyland this would have been an "E" ticket back in the day!

  12. Powerful indeed! Wa. State has the catchy phrase "Click it or Ticket" Adding a fair size fine made a big difference.

  13. I hope in this case that it is "monkey see, monkey do" and those non-users begin to buckle up.
