Rural

Hard to believe that Santa Cruz Island, one of the National Park Service's Channel Islands, is just a short boat ride away from Los Angeles. Large and mostly uninhabited by people, the upper reaches of the island have a decidedly rural feel. Santa Cruz Island has a ranching history, and you can read more about it here if you are interested.

  2. Hi Val,
Beautiful shot! The fence, or what's left of it leads you right to the top. Love the colors. Have a great day!

  3. I'm always amazed when I find places that are empty so close to NYC. I like this shot a lot, especially because of the fence posts

  4. So they have well water here? How about electricity?

I remember a song about Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance. It's sung by The Four Preps! Is that part of this island chain? I know that island is more populated.

  6. I love the golden grasses in this. So nice that it is preserved.
I haven't read T.C. Boyle's new book about these islands but have heard some interviews with him, sounds intriguing.

  7. The golden grass and remains of the fence create a wonderful peaceful scene so close to crowded urban living.

  8. Well, I grew up less than 100 miles away and never once visited the Channel Islands. Thank goodness these are part of the Park Service so will be protected forever. I really, really love this shot - the colors are just so fabulous.
