I need a new tripod

Friday night, I was so excited to go shoot that big beautiful moon. It was rising fairly early (4:45 PM) and we had crystal-clear skies. I set up my tripod, had a cable release, and was all ready to go.

Tip from the field, folks...skip the $20 Walmart tripods. Each time I asked the camera to focus, the lens motion moved the camera. Each time the shutter tripped, the motion moved the camera. Just a tiny bit, but enough to lose that razor-sharp moon edge I was hoping for. The legs are sturdy, and the mount fits tightly to the camera body, but the mount doesn't fit snugly to the tripod itself. Will be tripod shopping soon!

Shutter: 1/100, f/6.3, ISO 100, 270mm RAW, tripod mount (for what it was worth...)

  1. I have one of those cheapies too....and I get better pics almost by hand holding...let me know what you get. With that being said...what a beautiful moon!

  2. I have the $20 one from Ritz, havent had too much trouble but dont have the 300mm lens either. Guess I need to get it over to the botannical and see if I need a better one too. I do like this picture though. The moon is huge.

  4. So beautiful photo of the full moon. If you compare with my photo of the moon my is so... well, I didn't use a tripot at all. Same moon but so different pictures. I like that you have so many trees on your picture. It gives the picture depth.

  5. I have just bought my fourth tripod, progressively dearer but first three rubbish! The last one is a keeper and if it gets damaged I will buy another. It is a Fancier bought from China through eBay and I could not be happier. Main reason fully extended it is taller than me, no more stooping, the main shaft can be reversed so that you can suspend the camera inches above the ground for macro shots. the ball head coupling is so easy to use with a level bubble on both the tripod and the head, helps with keeping things level. i have walked ten miles carrying it and yes I was aware it was there, but only a little. Seems sturdy over the last six months or so. Not a big name but I think at $95 Aust delivered it was a bargain.

  7. It is a gorgeous photo. I love the way the trees frame the photo and the color of the sky is beautiful.

  8. A beautiful shot Val! I tried to get some shots too but it was so cold and windy here that I gave up after a short while. The wind was moving my camera on the tripod, and I just couldn't make myself stay out there any longer. I ended up with mostly blurry shots and the utility lines in the shot because I bailed out to get dinner before the moon got up high enough in the sky for a good shot! True confessions of a fair-weather photographer!!!

  9. But you still got a beautiful photograph. It's just that the more you photograph, the more discerning you get. I have a better tripod (but not the great camera and lenses you have).

  10. You and me both! I'm ready to buy a nice tripod...enough of the WalMart ones. But, you did capture the moon beautifully!
